I got news for you. Anti-virus doesn't prevent you from getting a virus. I've cleaned up 3 Windows PCs in the last 3 months with viruses and browser hijacks. ALL 3 were running Microsoft Security Essentials. The virus tax isn't about spending $30 for AV software, its about the maddening frustration of pop-ups and redirected searches and hacked hosts files etc.

Well, I formally switched today (my iBook arrived) - and I must say I am very impressed with the Mac. It feels like a quality build, and OS X feels better overall than Windows XP. (I think XP is a pretty good OS btw)

I went with the iBook because it was a pretty good value notebook, especially after recent price drops here in Europe. I don't think I qualify as a Mac zealot quite yet though... We'll see how the 'book holds up in a few weeks =P

    Even better.

    He's been put-down, for a while.That was fast. :p

As for Trump, I have to agree with mrkramer that he's the male version of Palin.

And, uh...you know he's got a penchant for naming everything after himself, right? How does The United States of Trump grab you?

This trend on these forums of people making posts without apparently reading the original post or any other posts in the thread before making a post is getting a little annoying.

Which of those things allows you to stream video and audio from an IOS device?

If iOS supported DLNA you would be able to do this without any new standard, there is no need for a new apple developed standard for this, I can stream video from my android phone to my TV, Bluray and PVR already. This is something devices have been able to do before Airplay came along.

It's not hat these devices need a new standard, just for apple to support an already industry wide used one.

And they're taught how to spell, too.

Unless & until you've been there (and it's obvious you haven't), you may want to temper that opinionthe right to publicly express same courtesy of the poor folks serving you are so condescendingly pitiful ofwith some factual knowledge. But that's the beauty of lifelong civilianhood, no need to live in the real world when there's some that do that for you.

    Carry on, shipwreck. ;)

Yeah because in the real world if I went into another country and carpet bombed a village I wouldn't be sent to jail. And the "until you've been there" argument is BS too. Do I need to first be a paedophile before denouncing paedophilia?

You really think that the civilians of Apple should involve themselves with an already extremely efficient killing machine? A homophobic, misogynistic one at that?

Loving the "latte" cliches, was wondering how long it would take for someone to come up with that.

If you people were all here 14 years ago, I guess you would have TORN INTO Apple for hiring Tim Cook from the "beige" PC maker?

    This sucks.

Your friend sounds like a dork. "OOOH, my HP has a Core 2 Duo! I AM SO l33t!"

    Give me a break.

ehh.. you know wikipedia isn't always right, right?

They are both based on the Core architecture, that was my only point.
I thought you were saying that they were completely unrelated.

Of course they are branded differently, they have different uses.
Historically Xeon is for high-end workstations and servers, people know and expect this.

They don't really need a reason besides pretty much every consumer camera using SD media these days.

Was it really that long ago? Time flies, eh? Anyway.... They could have added it to the Mini back then quietly and without redesigning the whole case, similar to the way that the 5th USB port was added, if it was to satisfy photographers.

And they didn't need to immediately go to the top end SDXC.... most consumer cameras aren't using those cards yet. Once the low or middle speed SD card reader was added, it would have been easy to upgrade it to the top end SD card reader in a few years when those cards were more widely used. This would have been more in line of Apple's philosophy of increasing specs and features and keeping prices down. i.e. Today's new Mini has plain SD card reader, and in a year they "add" the faster reader to make a "new" new Mini.

I think there is something more to this... we'll just have to stay tuned, eh?

Lemme' guess - it's going to be distributed through the app store, and everytime there is an update, you have to download an 8 GB install program for each update, ala XCode 4

I thought it was revolutionary - the idea that you always start with a template and never with a blank document. I thought - wow, all these years and Microsoft didn't come up with this?

But after trying to use it, it was non-intuitive and I gave up after about 10 minutes.

Word does actually start with a template rather than a blank document. Its name is normal.dot and you can change it anyway you like (put some formatting, text, headers and footers on it ...) and save it. Its a template like any other Word template you can create or use.

Here's the gist of the problem: too generous state worker union pensions. I wouldn't be surprised that these pensions are extensively re-done to drastically cut its cost in order to reduce state budget deficits.

So, the bad guys are the teachers, firefighters, police, tax collectors, engineers, paper pushers, etc... who are employed by the government? So, it's their fault that corporations and individuals aren't paying (or avoiding paying) sufficient taxes to pay for the spending that was enacted by elected officials?

Good to know who you blame for not being able to afford things like more oil subsidies, tax breaks for companies like GE, and lowering estate taxes on high value estates.

Not that surprising considering the efforts to now radically cut programs for the poor, sick and elderly.

(edit) How many BILLIONS of dollars in bribe money have been "lost" or "misplaced" or "stolen" in Iraq and Afghanistan? Billions with a B. Enough to fund the 14-16 billion dollar cost of extending unemployment 14 more weeks? In the past three years, over $3 billion in CASH was flown out of Kabul reports the Wall Street Journal. Officials don’t know exactly who got what, but have a general idea: “U.S. investigators believe top Afghan officials and their associates are sending billions of diverted U.S. aid and logistics dollars and drug money to financial safe havens abroad.” That’s still $9 billion less than what was lost in Iraq. Not quite enough, but close.

the both use the Intel Core microarchitecture technology, however they are branded differently

on the left side, is the only place that Xeon was listed. There are 5 processors listed there, however on the top where the tabs are, there are only 4, there is no xeon

something they taught in SAT's (i dont know if they still have this these days)
Merom:Woodcrest = C2D:Xeon... they are at the same level, but not one under the other

But weirdly, if you click the core 2 duo link on the Intel web page Xeons show up in the list (which vaguely blurs the lines). I assume that this is because some Conroes can be branded as Xeons and some as Desktop Core 2 Duos. In the end, I think we can all agree that Woodcrest Xeons, Conroes, and Meroms all share a common basic architecture (the core architecture) and that the Macpro was the first machine Apple shipped with the new architecture (with the iMac following).

    Cheers.

There was a study recently that showed that the bulk of suburban driving was non-work related and that most of those trips were less than two miles. We need to drive a lot less than we think we do.

I'd love to see that study.

I built a table that links directly to bestbuy, walmart and target (http://kiernanvandoorn.wordpress.com/2011/04/01/where-in-the-world-can-i-buy-an-ipad2-now/) to check inventory levels. it helps, but with very little supply there isn't any good news hiding on the back shelf. And there are horror stories all over the next about bad practices like forcing customers to buy service protection plans just to buy from existing inventory. Apple has a history of that... making their OS'es run faster than the previous one on the same hardware. At least that's what my experience has been with Panther, Tiger and Leopard preview.

When I bought my Powerbook G4 3 years ago, it came with Panther, then I upgraded to Tiger and it seemed to run much faster... much more responsive. After its hard drive died, I sold it and repaced it with a MacBook Pro with Tiger pre-installed and now that I am running on Leopard, it's running just as fast and sometimes even faster than Tiger. I am very pleased.*:)

Of what minimal programming experience I have, I was concerned by this code I found in one of the system startup scripts:

    setmaxcomputerspeed(.22113*MacOSXVersion);

    just being silly... :D

None of the stores around me (10+ stores) have the 16gb in stock. Any of you considering the 32GB for $399?

Thinking about it, but its $50 more than I can get my wife to spend over the $349 refurb 16gig from Apple.com

The MBA currently sold is a solid contender in and of itself. It has the perfect set of features already for me. The only things I'd want :

    - higher resolution screen. 13", 1920x1200. Do it.
    - Better GPU/CPU combo. No SB + Intel crap, gimme nVidia with newer generation processors. Intel should just get out of the GPU business.
    - USB3 only to get a 1 Gbps USB Ethernet adapter. But that's candy.

Otherwise, keep it like it is.

Why cant people just (I know this sounds crazy) listen to CR when they make factually based reviews (i.e., iPhone 4 antenna design CAN lead to dropped calls). I hate this blind bias some folks have on here.

then how do you explain CR giving the nod to another smartphone that *also* demonstrates a deathgrip loss of signal? they all do. yet, there was no hoopla about the others. only iphone.

thats what yanks the rug of credibility out from under them.
