That would be idiotic by Microsoft.

Why? A totally new *nix-based with Metro UI. Are you digging it?

they should allow users to like or dislike iAds to help cater the iAds that are sent to the user

Read the description: "...lets you tag your favorites to a Loved section thats all your own."

You can't "dislike" them and it doesn't say what they're doing with the "loved" section other than saving it for your personal viewing pleasure, but I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually catered to your preferences using something like this.

Make more sense. This sentence of yours makes none.

Even a Merriam-Webster is of no value to me, if we don't agree on which word we should use to encapsulate you.

I might have better luck with the Urban Dictionary (www.urbandictionary.com).

So how did they copy Apple? Having 90% of the market without a quality product one can only imagine what they could have done with a good product.
I wouldn't bother arguing *LTD* about this. Many have tried and failed. He simply refuses to accept that Redmond has produced some quality products without ripping off Apple. Each versions of every Microsoft products have their +'s and -'s. Recently, with Windows 7, Office IE9, WP7; Microsoft have been churning out some quality, solid, software. Not to mention what a great success the Xbox has turned out to be. Yes, they are not always the first to have some features in their products, but neither are Apple at times. Fast user switching is one that springs to mind.

Just because they licence their software to a range of hardware companies, *LTD* automatically thinks they are trash. And, yes, some of their products have been trash. But so have Apple's at times.

You are aware that the Core2Duo 'requirement' is because Lion is 64-bit, right?
Yes. That doesn't make it okay. I'd expect the first intel Macs to still be able to run the latest OS. What is the betting that computers from 2006 will be able to run Windows 8? High chance I'd say.

Apples response is linked as a PDF. Norwegian text and partially censored with a big black marker.

    http://www.nettavisen.no/it/article699846.ece

    Nettavisen
"We will not give up, we believe that this is an important consumer question and that the product lock-in they (Apple) have is unreasonable. The Ombudsman believes that locking music to a certain brand of player - is a problem that affects many people. Most people have cell phones that can take many songs, but all the music I have bought from iTunes I cant listen to via my cell phone, she says."

(direct translation and no cleanup so its a bit rough)

    Happy Birthday.

It is so true how OS X was a major turning point for Apple. One of the things that I always thought set Apple apart was their willingness to drastically alter course when needed. I remember the System 7, 8, 9 days well. I liked working on Macs, but at the time Windows NT was a more robust beast. When a suitcase can crash your machine, you know something is wrong. So along came OS X, and it surpassed MS for many years. For MS today, I can not comment. For from 10.4 on I abandoned all MS gear, and I still refuse to work with it. Thats not because XP was bad. It was quite strong. But where MS failed was in the shell - the user experience ( I ran custom shells on XP). And where Apple excelled was in this area. The stability of UNIX with a good user interface (not perfect, no RDF here) made digital work good.

I wonder what the future will bring. I hope for some real evolution in computing. iOS has given us some of that. I just hope that our 'trucks' don't get treated like real trucks, with little change over the years because they do their utilitarian tasks just fine.

    Also free Parallels!

It is a shame that apple do not let you combine the thanksgiving discount and education discount together :(

Yeah you should. You could have gotten it cheaper from Macconnection. No tax, free shipping, free carrying case, free mouse and $100 off. Hmmm

If it's an iPod first then why's it got such ****** capacity? Why's it called the iPhone? Seriously, are you a genuine music producer that's happy to walk around with just 8 gigs worth of music?

I don't carry around a 400 gig seagate hard drive - I carry around a 60 gig iPod because it does a great job.
And I have an iPod Nano 4 GB because it does a great job, while remaining small and thin. If you were expecting an HDD based phone from Apple, you're crazy. They wouldn't want to make such a fat phone, and I wouldn't want one. Fact is that an mp3 player with 8 GB capacity is on the high end in todays market.

His point was remove the TSA security check and only have only armed air marshals. Bringing a gun to a bomb fight is like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

My point was that the TSA security does provide a buffer to keep terrorists from boarding a plan packed with explosives where an armed masrhal is going to be useless.

The world we once knew no longer exists, time to get used to it.

No, my point was to scale it back to what it was before 9/11 and maintain both domestic and international security at the pre 9/11 level of international security.

We are all to blame here for jumping.

Who's this we ? My first post in that other thread was questionning the source of the rumor and asking why everyone was taking it as fact without any proof. :D

Use "I" if you must, don't include all of us in your over-reaction.

To complement my earlier screen shots from 2001 and I just found my original upgrade CD! from 10.0 to 10.1 love the way it states "Requires Mac OS X" quite a funny comparison when you look at in just 10 years OS X has gone from a 650Mb CD to a 8Gb Apple USB Drive

Oh please don't be so smart. What you say means to lose the pixel density of Retina Display. Would you want that?

Considering the treshold is 300 PPI for "Retina" at 12 inches of distance and that the iPhone 4 has 326 PPI at 3.5", yes I say we can afford to lose a few PPI for a bigger screen. In the end, it will still be "Retina" (as in you can't distinguish individual pixels at a normal viewing distance).

Anyway, it's not like a screen being "Retina" or not has any effect on a developer. If both screens are 960x640, the developer has nothing to change with his code or art at all. It will all work, no matter the actual screen size. What does being a developer even have to do with losing some PPI ? Nothing. Nothing at all.

The end-fact that Apple's source does not appear to be publicly accessible does not appear to be in dispute, but rather questions have arisen as to whether it was ever publicly accessible (publicly accessible as defined by not requiring registration with Apple. The source is still free).

Any item released under the APSL (Apple Public Source License) requires and has required since the dawn of the APSL users to register an account with Apple (free account). This is done so Apple can track that you have read the APSL before you gain access to the source. It has always been this way... in fact this registration requirement was talked about on and off for years on the Darwin lists (for example (http://lists.apple.com/archives/darwin-development/2001/Mar/msg00329.html)) and was one of the reasons that OpenDarwin was started (some folks just couldn't bring themselves to register).

A few years ago Apple integrated the open source account system with their Apple ID system so that if you have an Apple ID you didn't have to create a separate account you could just use that. See last paragraph of this email (http://lists.apple.com/archives/Publicsource-announce/2003/Aug/msg00000.html).

All Apple Developer Accounts (ADC) can be used as an Apple ID, as can .Mac accounts, Apple support forums accounts, Apple store accounts, etc.

Finally the 10.4.8 source never got linked on the top level darwin source page, only 10.4.7 got listed most recently (I have been looking for the last 3 weeks). The reason is that Apple is transitioning over to macosforge.org (that is the site that lists links to Intel version of XNU and only that site) and they appeared to have hit some system resource issue that has slowed this transition. As I noted in my prior post you can access 10.4.8 sources using a direct link to the tarball.

As a side note I have worked on Darwin sources since it was first put online under the APSL and I worked on aspects of OpenDarwin when it first got going. So I am speaking from a long history of experience with Darwin.

It may be that the backend has a different value stored than what displayed in your cached version. Honestly I know about as much of the system as you do. I haven't seen that behavior exhibited but I do thank you for bringing it up so that it can be looked into.I clicked on a post rated 0 and it went to -2. So either this guy is a troll, which is against the TOS, and he should be banned.

Or he's advocating breaking the law, which is (presumably) against the TOS, and he should be banned.

    Go go gadget mods!

bunch of haters. In a society where our own government is the biggest crook of all , you all have the nerve to jump down this guy's throat because of someone else's mistake!?!?

"In a society where the government is the biggest crook of all (and not to mention mind controls us through iPads which are embedded with the latest mind control tech), why would anyone get mad at someone for being a crook?!"

Sensical and logical. I am in love with you.

Plus, if you have ever been to a best buy, employees jump on and off registers all the time without logging off first. They will never know which employee did it.

    That makes it ok?

also consider that this was this guy's karma coming back to him. He did good and now he is getting rewarded.

There are no rules to karma, obviously, but I don't think anyone would say that a burglar who breaks into a house and doesn't get caught was being rewarded for something he did previously. This is similar, albeit on a smaller scale.

Plus if this cashier is dumb enough to mistake $230 for $500 plus tax then does Best Buy really want him working register and relying on customer honesty to save his job?

Which is more ethical and legal -- ignoring the mistake because it worked out in your benefit, or correcting his mistake and then simply letting a manager know about the mistake the cashier made?

I don't really get this... You already pay fees for the data - why do they care for how you use it?

It's funny because nowhere in europe (well, from first hand experience in UK/ Scandanavia), do the carriers prevent tethering, nor do they charge an extra fee for it.

They have data caps (100MB, 500MB, 1GB etc) but they don't care what you use it for. And this makes sense. Thus I can work from cafes through my HTC Desire, and as long as I'm not streaming video or downloading many podcasts then the 1GB/month is more than enough for my phone and occasional tethered usage.

For once Europe seems to be ahead of the curve to the advantage of the consumer when compared to the USA.

Because in the US they differentiate between data from a smart phone and data - it is based on the idea that a pure smart phone user is going to use a whole lot less data (due to the nature of the device itself) when compared to someone tethering it on a computer. In most other countries, such as where I live, there is no differentiation, there is one set of prices for data and whether you do it via smart phone, tethering, or 3G stick the telco doesn't matter because the data is all priced the same.

With IE 8 if I vote it get kicked back to the main forum page, if I press back I get the first error message below, the forum isn't displayed. If I then reload the page nothing happens and after a while I go to close the tab and the second error message appears.

It sometimes affects other forum pages I go to but will usually clear up after a while. I just have to remember not to vote while I am on IE8.
